Life insurance application process

When we talk to our clients and potential clients we try and walk them through the different parts of applying for life insurance.  It can sound like such a daunting task, but it is really very simple and we try and make it effortless for the client.   The first thing to apply for life insurance is to identify the company that you want to buy your policy with.  Once that has been identified, then it is a matter of filling out the life insurance application.  Depending on which company the length and number of forms to fill out varies.  For example, the MetLife I saw the other day was in the 40 page range, while Transamerica Family Markets was only about 10.     If you have a good agent, they should be able to get you through just about any application in 30 minutes.   With the application, you have the choice of submitting a check with it or applying with no check.  The only difference is with the check, you will have conditional coverage during the underwriting period.

The next step is to schedule the medical exam.  Typically the agent will call that in for you and then the paramedical company will reach out to you as the client.  They will set up the short medical exam at your leisure and do it at either at your house or at your business.    This exam gets more extensive depending on age and face amount of the policy, but it shouldn’t take too long either way.   Once the medical is done, the insurance company gets the results and processes the results along with the application.    This process typically takes about 4-6 weeks, depending on the carrier.

After the application gets approved, the policy gets delivered to you as the client.  You will then sign the policy receipt as proof of receiving and accepting the policy.
